Monroe is located to the east of Atlanta and lies in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It is the county seat of the Walton County of Georgia. According to the US Census Bureau, the city covers 10.5 square miles. It is home to 13,664 people and the population density is 1301.3 people per square mile.

Monroe was founded as the county seat of Walton County in 1818. Later, it was incorporated as a town in 1821 and changed to a city in 1896. During the 1990s, Monroe was the only cotton producer in Georgia. The two cotton mills were the driving economic force of this city. Today, they serve as premier antique markets.

The education in Monroe is looked after by the Walton County School District. It consists of 9 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and 4 high schools. There are 10,368 students and 675 teachers. The Government of this city includes a Mayor and a fulltime Administrator who is responsible for the daily operations in the city. The Mayor is Greg Thompson.

The city is rich in history and has an engaging cultural life. Its history is typified by antebellum homes, venerable government buildings and a historic downtown. The history and culture is preserved in the Monroe Museum. The downtown is also a must visit with an antique shopping experience. On Stage Walton is another place that can’t be missed. It is a theatre where a four-stage film is shown.

Monroe receives about 51 inches of rain and 1 inch of snow annually. The average high in summer months is 90 degrees Fahrenheit, which means that having an air conditioner is essential to maintain a bearable temperature inside the house.
