Winder is a city and the county seat of Barrow County in Georgia. It lies east of Atlanta, in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is in the heart of Barrow County and is 50 miles northeast of Atlanta downtown and 20 miles west of Athens. According to the US Census Bureau, the city stretches over 12.9 square miles. This city is home to 14,930 people. The population density is 1157.4 people per square mile.

It was a good place for early settlers. Creek Indians were the earliest settlers who named this city Snodon. Later, whites established farms and homes near this village in 1793 and the town was renamed in the same year.

As far as education is concerned, students in this city are served by the Barrow County School District. This district consists of 8 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 high schools. The Government of Winder operates under a typical mayor-council system. The mayor of Winder is David Maynard.

Winder is home to many museums and historic places. The oldest historic site here is the county courthouse which was built in 1920. It is also listed under National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1915, the Barrow County Museum is also located here. It features jail cells and a hanging tower. Numerous fun-filled events take place here, such as the SpringFest Carnival and Jug Tavern Festival.

Winder receives 50 inches of rainfall and 1 inch of snowfall every year. As the climate here is unexpected, residents are required to invest in air conditioners and heating systems. Temperatures in summers rise to 89 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes using air-conditioning a must.
